A half-day loop on Ujjain's western side: Kal Bhairav, Siddhavat, Mangalnath, Sandipani Ashram, Gadkalika and the Bharthari caves.
After Mahakal darshan, most pilgrims head out on Ujjain's western circuit, a loop of temples and ashrams spread along the Shipra. By car or e-rickshaw it makes a rewarding half day.
The loop (3–4 hours)
1. Kal Bhairav
Kal Bhairav is the kotwal (guardian) of Ujjain. Tradition says a Mahakal visit is incomplete without his darshan. The deity is famously offered liquor, which the priests pour to the idol's lips.
2. Siddhavat
Siddhavat is a sacred banyan tree on the Shipra, revered like the Akshayavat of Prayagraj. Families perform pind daan and rites for ancestors here.
3. Mangalnath
Mangalnath is believed to be the birthplace of Mars (Mangal). People with Mangal dosh in their horoscope come here for special pujas. See Mangal dosh puja at Mangalnath. The temple overlooks the Shipra, and in classical Indian astronomy Ujjain marked the prime meridian.
4. Sandipani Ashram
At Sandipani Ashram, Krishna, Balarama and Sudama are believed to have studied under Guru Sandipani. See the Gomti Kund and the place associated with washing the students' writing slates.
5. Gadkalika
Gadkalika is the goddess traditionally associated with the poet Kalidasa, who is said to have received his gift of poetry through her grace.
6. Bharthari caves
The Bharthari caves are linked to King Bharthari, the poet-king and brother of Vikramaditya who renounced his throne to become a yogi.
