About the Ujjain Simhastha & Mahakal Darshan package

Ujjain is the city of Mahakal. For most pilgrims, a visit to the Simhastha means two things: a holy dip in the Shipra at Ram Ghat, and darshan at Mahakaleshwar, the only one of the twelve Jyotirlingas that faces south. This three-day package gives you both, along with the temples that every Ujjain pilgrimage includes: Kal Bhairav, the guardian deity of the city, and Harsiddhi, one of the Shakti Peethas.

It is a short trip, ideal for a first visit or a long weekend, and it is planned around the realities of the Ujjain Simhastha: the April–May heat, the crowds around the Mahakal temple, and the need to book some darshan in advance.

Who this package suits

  • First-time visitors to Ujjain who want the essential pilgrimage in a short trip.
  • Travellers flying into Indore from anywhere in India.
  • Families with a limited number of days, including those combining Ujjain with business or family visits in Indore.

To add the second Jyotirlinga of the region, choose the Two Jyotirlinga Yatra: Ujjain & Omkareshwar. To live inside the mela, see the Simhastha Camp Experience.

When to go

The Ujjain Simhastha is expected to run from 27 March to 27 May 2028, as reported by the Madhya Pradesh government. The Shahi Snan dates are still awaiting official notification. Once they are announced, they will be the busiest days of the mela.

For this package we suggest:

  • Early in the Simhastha, late March to mid-April, when the heat is still manageable.
  • Avoiding the Shahi Snan days if you are travelling with seniors or children.
  • Planning darshan for early morning or evening, when temperatures are lower.

Enquire now and we will alert you as soon as the Shahi Snan dates are notified. Our guide to what we know about the 2028 Simhastha is updated as news comes in.

Your trip, in more detail

Day 1: arrival and the Shipra aarti. We pick you up from Indore airport (about 55 km away) or Ujjain Junction and take you to your stay. Rest through the afternoon heat. In the evening, attend the aarti at Ram Ghat, the main bathing ghat on the Shipra, and get a briefing for the next morning.

Day 2: snan and darshan. An early start for your snan at Ram Ghat, before the sun is high. Then Mahakaleshwar darshan, followed by a walk through Mahakal Lok, the corridor of murals and sculptures around the temple that tell stories from the Shiva Purana. After lunch and a rest, visit Harsiddhi, known for its tall deepstambhs (lamp towers), which are lit on special occasions, and Kal Bhairav, where devotees traditionally offer liquor to the deity, a practice unique to this temple.

Day 3: departure. Drop at Ujjain Junction or Indore airport.

About the Bhasma Aarti

The Bhasma Aarti, performed before dawn at Mahakaleshwar, is the most sought-after ritual in Ujjain. Slots are limited and must be booked through the temple's official channels. During the Simhastha, demand will be extremely high. The aarti is not included in the package because we cannot guarantee a slot, but we will guide you through the booking process as soon as you confirm. Read our Bhasma Aarti guide for how it works and what to wear.

Where you stay

This package uses our AC Camp category: insulated, air-conditioned tents with generator backup, shaded areas and cold drinking water. In an April–May mela, when afternoons regularly cross 40 °C, cooling is the most important comfort you can have. For more space, upgrade to a Luxury Camp. We confirm the exact camp, location and photos before you pay.

What is included

  • Two nights' stay with daily breakfast and dinner
  • Airport or station transfers
  • Local sightseeing by private car
  • Planning help for snan timing and darshan

Not included: train or air fare, Bhasma Aarti and VIP darshan fees, and lunches. Darshan fees are paid directly to the temple.

How the price is worked out

The package is priced on request. Because the Shahi Snan dates have not been announced, rates will firm up as the mela approaches. Your quote depends on your dates, stay category, number of travellers and whether you arrive at Indore or Ujjain. We confirm everything in writing before you pay.

Beating the heat

  • Drink water and ORS through the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Wear light cotton clothes, a hat or a cotton scarf, and sunglasses.
  • Rest between noon and 4 pm. Plan temples for the morning and evening.
  • Carry a small umbrella for shade while queuing.

Our summer heat survival guide has more advice.

Mahakal darshan: what to know

  • Dress modestly. For the Bhasma Aarti, the temple prescribes traditional dress, usually a dhoti for men and a saree for women. Check the current rules when you book.
  • Phones and bags are usually deposited before entering the inner areas; carry as little as possible.
  • Queues move faster early in the morning and late in the evening, which also avoids the worst of the heat.
  • Visit Mahakal Lok in the evening, when the corridor's sculptures and murals are lit and the air is cooler.

Our Mahakal Lok corridor guide explains the stories behind the sculptures.

Ujjain's food

Ujjain is a vegetarian-friendly city with its own breakfast tradition: poha and jalebi, served hot from street stalls each morning. For lunch, try dal bafla, Malwa's answer to Rajasthan's dal baati, with ghee and chutney. In the heat, sugarcane juice and lassi are everywhere; stick to busy stalls. Our Ujjain food guide lists what to try.

Questions about the Ujjain Simhastha & Mahakal Darshan
