Surviving the Heat at the Ujjain Simhastha

April–May in Ujjain often crosses 40 °C. How to plan your day, what to wear and drink, heatstroke warning signs and how to keep children and seniors safe.

The Ujjain Simhastha falls in late March to May, the hottest months in Malwa. Afternoon temperatures of 40 °C and above are common, and heat is the biggest health risk at this Kumbh. Plan for it.

Plan your day around the sun

Time What to do
4–9 a.m. Snan, darshan, Bhasma Aarti: the best hours
9–11 a.m. Short visits, then head back
11 a.m.–4/5 p.m. Rest indoors, in AC or shade
5–9 p.m. Temples, Mahakal Lok, the Shipra aarti, akhara camps

What to wear

  • Loose, light-coloured cotton that covers your arms
  • A cap, hat or umbrella, and sunglasses
  • Comfortable sandals (stone surfaces get very hot), plus cotton socks for temple courtyards where footwear isn't allowed
  • A damp cotton scarf around the neck

What to drink and eat

  • Drink water constantly, even when not thirsty
  • ORS, nimbu pani, buttermilk (chhaas), coconut water, aam panna
  • Avoid heavy, oily meals before going out
  • Fasting on snan days? Break the fast early with fluids and fruit, and don't fast in extreme heat if you are elderly or unwell

Heatstroke: know the signs

Get medical help immediately if someone has:

  • a high body temperature with hot, dry skin (no sweating)
  • confusion, slurred speech or fainting
  • a rapid pulse, headache, nausea or vomiting

First aid: move them to shade, loosen their clothing, cool them with wet cloths and a fan, give sips of water if they are conscious, and call 108 or 112.

Children and seniors

Storms

Pre-monsoon storms and dust squalls can strike suddenly in May. If you are in a camp, know where the shelter is, and follow announcements.
