How the Ujjain Simhastha 2028 will differ from 2016—Mahakal Lok, new ghats, the Kanh diversion, roads, crowd planning and what it means for pilgrims.
If you attended the 2016 Simhastha, the Ujjain of 2028 will look quite different. Here is what has changed, and what it means for your trip.
2016 at a glance
- Held in April–May 2016 on the Shipra, centred on Ram Ghat
- Akhara camps and pilgrim sectors spread across the riverbanks
- A sudden pre-monsoon storm in May 2016 damaged tents and pandals, a reminder that weather can turn quickly in this season
What's new for 2028
1. Mahakal Lok
The Mahakal Lok corridor, opened in 2022 and extended in a second phase, transformed the area around Mahakaleshwar with:
- wide walkways
- sculptures and murals from Shiva stories
- links to Rudrasagar lake and towards Ram Ghat
Darshan access is more organised than in 2016, but crowds will still be enormous. See our Mahakal Lok guide.
2. New and expanded ghats
The state has planned permanent ghats in durable stone along both banks of the Shipra, with integrated parking and access roads, to spread bathers over a much longer stretch than in 2016.
3. A cleaner Shipra
The Kanh diversion project carries polluted water from the Kanh river through a long closed duct and tunnel so that it doesn't enter the Shipra at Ujjain. Reports in mid-2026 said the tunnel work was well advanced.
4. Roads and connectivity
Road works were reported to be largely on the ground by mid-2026. The government set June 2027 as the deadline for major works.
5. Crowd planning on a new scale
Planning figures for 2028 are many times higher than in 2016. A security audit has planned:
- parking zones
- satellite railway stations
- separate entry and exit routes for different ghats
- daily darshan capacity of around one lakh devotees at Mahakaleshwar
What it means for you
- Expect more walking. Parking zones will be further out, with shuttles towards the ghats.
- Choose your ghat. With more ghats, you may be directed to a specific one rather than Ram Ghat.
- Book darshan and Bhasma Aarti online well in advance. See the Bhasma Aarti guide.
- Book stays early. Hotels near Mahakal Lok will be first to fill.
