What the Bhasma Aarti is, how bookings work, what to wear and how to plan it during the Simhastha.
The Bhasma Aarti at Shri Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain is one of the most sought-after rituals in India. Held before dawn, it is the only aarti in which the Jyotirlinga is offered sacred ash (bhasma).
What happens
In the early hours, priests bathe and adorn the lingam and then offer bhasma to the chant of mantras, drums and conch shells. Devotees watch from the halls around the sanctum. It is intense, crowded and deeply moving.
How to book
- As reported in April 2026, offline permission has ended and booking is online-only, through the Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple Management Committee's official website.
- A July 2026 report says one mobile number can be used to book only once in three months, and VIP protocol bookings have been restricted.
- Slots open in advance and are limited. During festivals and the Simhastha they fill almost immediately, so book on the day the window opens.
- You will need ID for each person, and the same ID must be shown at entry.
- Beware of touts and unofficial websites offering "guaranteed" slots.
Booking rules and fees change often. Always confirm them on the temple's official website.
We can guide you through the process, but nobody can honestly guarantee a Bhasma Aarti slot.
Dress code and rules
The temple sets a dress code for certain areas of the aarti—typically traditional dress such as dhoti for men and saree for women. Rules can change, so check the temple's current guidelines when you book. Phones and bags are usually not allowed; use the cloakroom.
Planning around the Simhastha
- Book a stay within walking distance of the temple—you will be leaving very early.
- Sleep early the night before and keep warm clothes handy if you are visiting outside summer.
- If you miss out on a slot, regular darshan and the Mahakal Lok corridor at night are still wonderful experiences.
