How to take elderly parents to the Ujjain Simhastha 2028—choosing the day, heat protection, Mahakal darshan options, AC stays, walking and health tips.
For many elders, a Simhastha snan and Mahakal darshan is a lifelong wish. Ujjain's challenge is the summer heat, on top of the crowds. With the right plan, it is very manageable.
1. Choose the right time
- Avoid Shahi Snan days. Once the dates are announced, choose a day in between.
- Late March or early April is cooler than May.
- Do everything outdoors before 10–11 a.m. or after 5 p.m.
2. Stay close, and in AC
An AC hotel within walking distance of Mahakal Lok, with a lift, is the safest base. See Hotels near Mahakal Lok If you prefer to stay in the mela, choose our AC Camp.
3. Darshan without exhaustion
- Go for darshan early morning or late evening.
- Ask about the temple's quick-darshan (shighra darshan) ticket and any facilities for elderly or differently-abled devotees. Rules change, so check the official website.
- The Bhasma Aarti means waking very early and a long sitting. Decide whether it suits your parent's health. See the Bhasma Aarti guide.
- Carry water, and a folding stool if it is permitted.
4. The snan
- Choose a less crowded ghat with railings. The new ghats along the Shipra will spread out the crowds.
- A family member should hold their arm in the water.
- A symbolic snan, sprinkling Shipra water, is traditional for those who can't immerse.
5. Heat protection
- Hydrate constantly with water, ORS, buttermilk and nimbu pani.
- Wear light cotton, a cap or umbrella, and sunglasses.
- Know the warning signs of heatstroke: confusion, no sweating, high temperature, fainting. Get medical help immediately.
- Avoid heavy meals before going out. See Surviving the heat.
6. Safety
- Put a contact card in every senior's pocket.
- Agree a meeting point at each place.
- Use e-rickshaws for short hops where vehicles are allowed.
