The expected dates, preparations and how to start planning a trip to the Ujjain Simhastha Kumbh in 2028.
Ujjain hosts the Simhastha Kumbh on the Shipra every twelve years. The last one was in 2016; the next is in 2028, and Madhya Pradesh has already started large-scale preparations.
Expected dates
The Simhastha period currently reported is 27 March to 27 May 2028. The individual Shahi Snan dates have not yet been officially notified. We have seen several different dates on unofficial websites; we will publish them only when the authorities confirm them.
What makes Ujjain different
- Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, the only south-facing Jyotirlinga, is a short walk from the main ghats.
- Ram Ghat on the Shipra is the main bathing ghat.
- Summer timing—April and May are very hot, often above 40 °C.
- Omkareshwar, another Jyotirlinga, is within a day trip.
Planning now
Even without exact snan dates, you can:
- Decide your window. Most pilgrims will aim for April or early May.
- Shortlist stays. Hotels near Mahakal Lok and camps with air-conditioning will be in high demand.
- Plan for heat. Early-morning snan and darshan, rest at midday, evening sightseeing.
- Consider Indore as a base. It is about 55 km away with many more hotels and an airport.
