Mahakaleshwar & Mahakal Lok

One of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the only south-facing one, with the Bhasma Aarti and the new Mahakal Lok corridor.

Mahakaleshwar is Ujjain’s presiding deity. The lingam is swayambhu (self-manifested) and faces south (Dakshinamukhi), which makes it unique among the twelve Jyotirlingas. The pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti is one of the most sought-after rituals in India.

The Mahakal Lok corridor, opened in 2022, links the temple to the Rudrasagar lake with sculptures and murals from Shiva stories, and is especially beautiful when lit at night.

Visiting tips

  • Book the Bhasma Aarti only through the temple’s official website or counters.
  • Mobile phones and bags may not be allowed inside—use the cloakroom.
