Mandu

A ruined hilltop fortress city of palaces and lakes—Jahaz Mahal, Hindola Mahal and the story of Baz Bahadur and Rani Roopmati.

Mandu (Mandav) is a vast fortified plateau of Afghan-era palaces, mosques and tombs. The Jahaz Mahal, a long palace between two lakes, looks like a ship at anchor, and Rani Roopmati’s pavilion overlooks the Narmada valley.

It is a heritage add-on for families with an extra day after the Simhastha, best combined with Maheshwar or Indore.

Visiting tips

  • April–May afternoons are very hot—start early and carry water.
  • Hire a local guide to make sense of the many monuments.
