Omkareshwar

The island Jyotirlinga on the Narmada, on Mandhata island, which is said to be shaped like the sacred Om.

Omkareshwar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, set on Mandhata island in the Narmada. Pilgrims usually visit both Omkareshwar and Mamleshwar temples, cross the river by bridge or boat, and walk the island parikrama.

Combining Ujjain’s Mahakaleshwar with Omkareshwar is one of the most popular two-Jyotirlinga pilgrimages in India.

Visiting tips

  • Start early from Ujjain; the drive is 3–3.5 hours each way.
  • Boat rides on the Narmada give the best view of the island.
