Maheshwar

Ahilyabai Holkar’s riverside capital on the Narmada, with a fort, temple-lined ghats and handloom Maheshwari sarees.

Maheshwar was the capital of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, the eighteenth-century ruler remembered for rebuilding temples across India, including Kashi Vishwanath and Grishneshwar. Her fort rises above long stone ghats on the Narmada lined with temples and chhatris.

The town is famous for Maheshwari handloom sarees. It pairs naturally with Omkareshwar, about 65 km away.

Visiting tips

  • Watch the sunset and evening aarti from the ghats.
