Harsiddhi Temple and the Lamp-Pillar Aarti

Harsiddhi Mata temple in Ujjain: the Shakti Peetha legend, King Vikramaditya, the towering lamp pillars and how to see the evening aarti.

A short walk from Mahakaleshwar stands the temple of Harsiddhi Mata, one of Ujjain's most beloved shrines. Its evening spectacle, when two towering deepstambhs (lamp pillars) blaze with hundreds of lamps, is one of the most beautiful sights of a Simhastha visit.

Legend

  • Harsiddhi is counted among the Shakti Peethas. According to tradition, part of Sati's body (often said to be her elbow) fell here.
  • The goddess is closely associated with King Vikramaditya, Ujjain's legendary ruler, who is said to have been her devotee.
  • The temple sits between Mahakaleshwar and Rudrasagar, at the heart of the old sacred city.

The deepstambhs

In the courtyard stand two tall lamp pillars, studded with hundreds of small lamps. On many evenings, and especially during Navratri, they are lit by climbers who scale the pillars, a ritual usually sponsored by devotees. The sight of both pillars glowing against the night sky is unforgettable.

How to see it

  • Time: around the evening aarti at sunset. Ask at the temple office about that day's lamp lighting.
  • Sponsoring a lighting: devotees can book the lighting through the temple administration. Check the current process and waiting list.
  • Crowds: very busy on Navratri and festival evenings, and during the Simhastha.

Tips

  • Combine with Mahakaleshwar and an evening walk through Mahakal Lok.
  • Photography rules vary inside the temple. Ask first.
  • Keep your belongings secure in the evening crowds.
