What an Amrit (Shahi) Snan is, the three Haridwar 2027 Amrit Snan dates, how the akhara processions work and how ordinary pilgrims can bathe and watch safely.
The Amrit Snan, long known as the Shahi Snan or royal bath, is the heart of every Kumbh. On these days the akharas, the great orders of sadhus, march in procession to the river and bathe first. The rest of the pilgrims follow once the akharas have bathed.
Haridwar 2027 Amrit Snan dates
| Date | Occasion |
|---|---|
| Saturday, 6 March 2027 | Maha Shivratri |
| Monday, 8 March 2027 | Phalgun Amavasya |
| Wednesday, 14 April 2027 | Mesh Sankranti (Baisakhi) |
These were announced by the mela administration in April 2026. The Kumbh also has seven other bathing days. See all 10 snan dates.
What happens on the day
- The night before. Roads into the mela are closed or diverted, and vehicles are held at parking areas.
- Before dawn. The akharas gather at their camps with chariots, flags, bands, elephants or horses where permitted, and thousands of sadhus.
- The procession. Each akhara moves along a fixed route to Har Ki Pauri in a traditional order agreed with the administration. The Naga sadhus of the Shaiva akharas, ash-smeared and carrying tridents, are usually the most dramatic sight.
- The snan. Each akhara gets a time window at Brahma Kund. The public ghats around remain open for pilgrims, but the Brahma Kund area is reserved for the akharas during their slots.
- Afternoon. Once the processions are over, public bathing at Har Ki Pauri resumes. The crowds stay heavy until evening.
Can ordinary pilgrims bathe on an Amrit Snan day?
Yes. Most pilgrims bathe at one of the many public ghats along the river. Bathing at Brahma Kund itself is possible only after the akharas' slots end. If you specifically want to bathe at Har Ki Pauri, expect to wait.
How to watch the processions
- The procession routes are lined with barricades. Get a spot along the route well before dawn.
- Do not try to cross the procession or approach the akharas.
- Photography is generally tolerated from a distance, but ask before close-up photos of sadhus, and never photograph anyone bathing.
- Carry water and a snack. You may be standing for hours.
Is it a good idea for families?
Amrit Snans are the most crowded days of the Kumbh. Families with young children or elderly members may prefer a regular snan day such as Basant Panchami or Ram Navami. If you do choose an Amrit Snan:
- stay within walking distance of the ghats
- arrive the day before
- travel with a coordinator who knows the permitted routes
