Why the Haridwar Kumbh 2027 is an Ardh Kumbh, how the twelve-year cycle works, and how 2027 compares with the 2010, 2016 and 2021 melas.
Many pilgrims ask us whether Haridwar 2027 is a "real" Kumbh. The short answer is yes. Here is how the cycle works.
The Kumbh cycle in brief
- Purna (full) Kumbh is held at each of the four Kumbh cities roughly every 12 years, timed by the position of Jupiter (Brihaspati) and the Sun.
- Ardh (half) Kumbh is held about six years after the Purna Kumbh, and only at Haridwar and Prayagraj.
- Maha Kumbh is the name given to the Prayagraj Kumbh at the end of a longer cycle, as in 2025.
- Simhastha is the name for the Kumbh at Nashik–Trimbakeshwar and Ujjain, held when Jupiter is in Leo (Simha).
Recent Haridwar melas
| Year | Mela | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2010 | Purna Kumbh | January–April |
| 2016 | Ardh Kumbh | January–April |
| 2021 | Purna Kumbh | Held mainly in April with pandemic restrictions |
| 2027 | Ardh Kumbh | 14 January – 20 April 2027 |
Haridwar's Purna Kumbh came in 2021 rather than 2022 because of the planetary timing that year. This shifted the cycle, so the Ardh Kumbh falls in 2027.
Is an Ardh Kumbh smaller?
Not necessarily. The Uttarakhand government has said the 2027 mela will be held with the scale and arrangements of a Purna Kumbh. The akharas take Amrit Snans and the mela administration plans for very large crowds. For pilgrims, the experience is the same:
- the holy dip on auspicious days
- the akhara processions
- satsangs, the Ganga Aarti and the atmosphere of the mela
Does an Ardh Kumbh snan carry the same merit?
Traditions differ. Many saints teach that bathing in the Ganga at Haridwar during any Kumbh period, Ardh or Purna, is highly meritorious, especially on the auspicious snan days. Ask your family purohit or guru for guidance specific to your tradition.
When is the next Haridwar Kumbh after 2027?
On the usual cycle, the next Purna Kumbh in Haridwar is expected around 2033. Exact years are confirmed by the authorities and the akharas closer to the time.
