Asthi Visarjan in Haridwar: Process and Practical Guide

How asthi visarjan is done at Har Ki Pauri, Haridwar: the rituals, what to bring, travelling with ashes and choosing a priest.

For many Hindu families, immersing a loved one's ashes (asthi) in the Ganga at Haridwar is the final duty to the departed. It is believed to help the soul attain peace and liberation. If you are planning this, here is a gentle, practical guide.

Rituals vary by family, region and community. Your family purohit's guidance comes first.

Where it is done

Asthi visarjan in Haridwar is traditionally done at Har Ki Pauri, at the area commonly called the Asthi Pravah Ghat, where priests perform the rites at the river. Some families also perform rituals at Kushavarta Ghat or at their family priest's ghat.

The process (typical)

  1. Meet your priest. This may be your family's hereditary teerth purohit (panda), who may also hold your family's genealogy register. See Haridwar's family registers.
  2. Sankalp. The priest recites the name, gotra and details of the departed and the family.
  3. Puja. Offerings of flowers, milk, sesame (til), and sometimes rice balls (pind), with mantras.
  4. Visarjan. The ashes, usually in a cloth bag or urn, are gently immersed in the river.
  5. Snan and daan. Family members often take a dip, followed by charity or dakshina as per tradition.

The ritual itself usually takes 30–60 minutes.

What to bring

  • The asthi, in a cloth bag or sealed urn, ideally inside another bag
  • Details of the departed: full name, father's name, gotra, native place and date of death
  • A copy of the death certificate, in case it is asked for
  • Flowers, a white cloth and a change of clothes; many priests can arrange puja items
  • Cash for dakshina and offerings

Travelling with ashes

  • Trains and buses: carry the asthi respectfully in a closed bag. Keep the death certificate handy.
  • Flights: check your airline's current rules before travelling, and carry the death certificate.

During the Kumbh

  • Avoid Amrit Snan days (6 March, 8 March and 14 April 2027), when Har Ki Pauri is restricted for the akhara processions.
  • Choose a regular day and go early in the morning.
  • Many families combine asthi visarjan with pind daan. See Pind daan and shraddh in Haridwar.

Choosing a priest

  • Ask whether your family already has a Haridwar purohit. Elders often know.
  • Agree on the ritual and dakshina in advance.
  • Avoid touts who approach you at the station or ghat.
