Haridwar is the gateway to the Char Dham. Here is how the Kumbh 2027 calendar and the Char Dham opening season fit together, and how to plan one or both.
Haridwar is called the Gateway to the Gods because the Char Dham Yatra—Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath—traditionally begins here. So pilgrims often ask: can I do the Kumbh and the Char Dham in one trip?
The timing challenge
- Haridwar Kumbh 2027: 14 January – 20 April 2027.
- Char Dham temples are closed in winter. They usually reopen from late April to May: Yamunotri and Gangotri around Akshaya Tritiya, and Kedarnath and Badrinath shortly after. The 2027 opening dates are announced by the temple committees, usually early in the year.
So for most of the Kumbh the Char Dham temples are closed. The only possible overlap is at the very end of the Kumbh, if the temples open early.
Your options
Option 1: Kumbh now, Char Dham later (recommended)
Do the Kumbh snan in Haridwar, ideally with Rishikesh, between January and April. Return for the Char Dham Yatra in May–June or September–October 2027, when weather and access are best.
Option 2: Late-season Kumbh, then Char Dham
If the 2027 opening dates fall soon after 20 April, plan a Kumbh snan on Mesh Sankranti (14 April) or Chaitra Purnima (20 April). Rest in Haridwar or Rishikesh, then start the Char Dham as the temples open. Opening weeks are crowded, and high-altitude weather can still be cold or unsettled.
Option 3: Kumbh with winter seats of the Char Dham
In winter, the deities of some dhams are worshipped at their winter seats at lower altitudes. Ask us about visiting these with your Kumbh trip.
Registration
The Uttarakhand government requires registration for the Char Dham Yatra, which is separate from any Kumbh arrangement. Always use the official tourism portal.
Plan with one team
