What to eat in Nashik during the Simhastha 2027—misal, sabudana khichdi, thalipeeth, puran poli and chivda—plus fasting food and food safety.
Nashik's food is hearty Maharashtrian fare: spicy, filling and full of local flavour. During the Simhastha you will also find bhandaras run by akharas and ashrams, and plenty of fasting (upvas) food.
Must-try Nashik food
- Nashik misal: a spicy sprouted-moth curry (usal) topped with farsan, onion and lemon, served with pav. Nashik's misal is famous across Maharashtra for its fiery kat (gravy). Ask for "less spicy" if needed.
- Sabudana khichdi and sabudana vada: tapioca pearls with peanuts, a staple, and also a fasting food.
- Thalipeeth: a multi-grain flatbread with butter or curd.
- Puran poli: a sweet flatbread stuffed with chana dal and jaggery.
- Pithla-bhakri: gram-flour curry with a millet flatbread, rustic and delicious.
- Chivda: Nashik is known for its flattened-rice snack mixes, so take some home.
- Grapes: Nashik is India's grape capital, though fresh grapes are a winter crop, not a monsoon one.
Fasting (upvas) food
Many pilgrims fast on snan days and Shravan Mondays. Look for:
- Sabudana khichdi and vada
- Rajgira (amaranth) and varai (barnyard millet) dishes
- Fruits, peanuts and milk-based sweets
Most restaurants in Panchavati and Trimbak offer upvas menus during festivals.
Sattvik and vegetarian
The Panchavati and Trimbakeshwar temple areas are overwhelmingly vegetarian, and many eateries can prepare food without onion and garlic on request. Bhojanalayas serve simple, filling thalis.
Bhandaras
Akharas and ashrams serve free meals during the Simhastha. Sit in line, eat what is served, don't waste food, and leave a donation if you wish.
Monsoon food safety
- Eat freshly cooked, hot food at busy places.
- Drink sealed bottled or boiled water only.
- Avoid cut fruit, chutneys left out, and ice.
- Sanitise hands before eating.
- Carry ORS and basic stomach medicine.
