Why the Simhastha Kumbh has two bathing sites—Ramkund in Nashik and Kushavarta in Trimbakeshwar—who bathes where, and which to choose for your 2027 trip.
Every other Kumbh happens in one town. The Nashik Simhastha is different: it is one Kumbh held at two places about 28 km apart. This confuses many first-time pilgrims, so here is how it works.
Two towns, two traditions
| Nashik (Panchavati) | Trimbakeshwar | |
|---|---|---|
| Main bathing place | Ramkund, on the Godavari | Kushavarta Kund, the sacred tank |
| Akharas | Vaishnav (Bairagi) akharas | Shaiva (Sannyasi) akharas, including the Naga sadhus |
| Presiding temple | Kalaram Temple and the Ramayana sites | Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga |
| Character | A large city with many hotels | A small temple town in the hills |
| 3rd Amrit Snan 2027 | 11 September | 12 September |
The arrangement goes back centuries. Shaiva and Vaishnav orders have bathed separately here to avoid disputes over precedence.
Which should you choose?
Choose Nashik if you…
- want hotel choice and city comforts
- are devoted to Lord Rama, as Panchavati is where Rama, Sita and Lakshmana are believed to have lived in exile
- are travelling with seniors and want flat, accessible areas and hospitals nearby
Choose Trimbakeshwar if you…
- are a Shiva devotee and want Jyotirlinga darshan
- want to see the Naga sadhus and Shaiva akharas
- plan rituals such as Kaal Sarp shanti or Narayan Nagbali. See our ritual guide.
- like the hills: Brahmagiri and the source of the Godavari are right there
Or do both
Most of our pilgrims stay in one place and visit the other on a non-snan day. Travelling between them on an Amrit Snan day is difficult because of traffic controls. See Nashik to Trimbakeshwar on snan days.
Is one snan "more sacred"?
Both are part of the same Simhastha, and bathing at either is considered meritorious. Follow your family or sampradaya tradition: Vaishnav families often prefer Ramkund, and Shaiva families Kushavarta.
Plan both in one trip
Our Nashik & Trimbakeshwar Simhastha Yatra includes snan at Ramkund, darshan at Trimbakeshwar and a visit to Kushavarta. See also the 3-day itinerary.
