Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga on the Narmada: Mandhata island, Mamleshwar, parikrama, boat rides, the Statue of Oneness and how to get there from Ujjain.
Omkareshwar, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, stands on Mandhata island in the Narmada. The island's shape is often likened to the sacred Om. For Simhastha pilgrims it is the natural companion to Mahakaleshwar.
Getting there
| From | Approx. distance | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Ujjain | 140 km | 3–3.5 hrs |
| Indore | 80 km | 2–2.5 hrs |
| Maheshwar | 65 km | ~1.5–2 hrs |
The two temples
- Omkareshwar temple, on Mandhata island
- Mamleshwar (Amareshwar) temple, on the southern bank
Many devotees visit both to complete their darshan, following local tradition.
Cross the river by the footbridges or by boat.
Parikrama
The Omkareshwar parikrama, a walk around Mandhata island, takes a few hours, passing ghats, temples and ashrams. It is best started early in the morning, especially in summer.
Statue of Oneness (Ekatmata Dham)
On Mandhata hill stands the Statue of Oneness, a 108-ft statue of Adi Shankaracharya, unveiled in 2023. Adi Shankaracharya is believed to have met his guru, Govinda Bhagavatpada, at Omkareshwar.
Boat rides
A Narmada boat ride gives the best view of the island and the temple. Wear life jackets, agree fares beforehand, and avoid boats that are overloaded.
