When the next Kumbh at Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam is expected, the traditional bathing festivals, and how to start planning for the Ardh Kumbh 2031.
The Maha Kumbh of January–February 2025 at Prayagraj was one of the largest gatherings in human history. The next Kumbh at the Triveni Sangam is the Ardh Kumbh in 2031, followed by the next Purna Kumbh in 2037.
When is it?
The Kumbh at Prayag is traditionally held during the Hindu month of Magh, roughly January to March. The Uttar Pradesh government has already begun preparations for 2031, but official bathing dates have not yet been announced. We will publish them on our Prayagraj page as soon as they are notified.
The traditional bathing festivals
These are the snan days traditionally observed at the Prayag Kumbh. Exact 2031 dates follow the Hindu calendar and will be confirmed officially.

Ardh Kumbh vs Purna Kumbh vs Maha Kumbh
- Purna Kumbh is held every 12 years at each of the four Kumbh cities.
- Ardh Kumbh ("half Kumbh") is held about six years after the Purna Kumbh, at Prayagraj and Haridwar.
- Maha Kumbh is the name given to the Prayagraj Kumbh at the end of a twelve-cycle span, as in 2025.
An Ardh Kumbh is still a vast mela, with akhara processions, Amrit Snans, kalpvasis and crores of pilgrims.
How to start planning
- Register your interest early. Camps near the Sangam sell out within weeks of the dates being announced.
- Decide on Kalpvas. If you want to stay the full month, choose a camp that offers Kalpvas packages.
- Choose your snan day. Mauni Amavasya is the most auspicious and the most crowded; Makar Sankranti and Maghi Purnima are easier for families and seniors.
- Add Varanasi and Ayodhya. Both are within a few hours by road.
