Why Ramkund in Nashik is sacred for asthi visarjan, how the ritual is performed, what to bring, monsoon precautions and planning around the Simhastha 2027.
Ramkund on the Godavari, where Lord Rama is believed to have bathed, is one of the most important places in western India for asthi visarjan, the immersion of a loved one's ashes. Many families from Maharashtra, Gujarat and beyond come here to perform this final rite.
Rituals vary by family and community. Follow your family purohit's guidance.
Why Ramkund?
- Its association with Lord Rama, who according to tradition performed rites for his father King Dasharatha in Panchavati
- The Godavari, revered as the Dakshin Ganga (Ganga of the south)
- A long tradition of teerth purohits who serve families from particular regions
How the ritual is usually done
- Meet your purohit at Ramkund. Families often have a hereditary priest here.
- Sankalp: the names, gotra and details of the departed and of the family are recited.
- Puja with flowers, milk, sesame and other offerings.
- Visarjan: the ashes are immersed in the Godavari at the designated spot.
- Snan and daan by family members, as per tradition.
The rite usually takes 30–60 minutes.
What to bring
- The asthi, in a cloth bag or urn
- Details of the departed: full name, father's name, gotra, native place, date of death
- A copy of the death certificate
- A change of clothes; the priest can arrange the puja items
- Cash for dakshina
Monsoon and Simhastha precautions
- In heavy rain the Godavari can rise quickly at Ramkund. Follow police instructions and stay off submerged steps.
- Avoid Amrit Snan days (2 August, 31 August and 11 September 2027). Panchavati is closed to vehicles and packed with pilgrims.
- The Ram Kal Path works around Ramkund may change approach routes. Ask your purohit for the current access.
Combine with other rites
Families often combine asthi visarjan with pind daan or with Tripindi shraddh at Trimbakeshwar. See Kaal Sarp, Narayan Nagbali and Tripindi.
