Is Indore a good base for the Ujjain Simhastha 2028? Distance, transport, snan-day traffic, who it suits and what to do in Indore between temple visits.
Indore, Madhya Pradesh's largest city, is about 55 km from Ujjain and has the region's main airport. With far more hotels than Ujjain, it's tempting as a Simhastha base. Here's when that works, and when it doesn't.
The pros
- Huge hotel choice, from budget to five-star
- Devi Ahilyabai Holkar Airport is right there
- Great food, especially Sarafa Bazaar's night market and 56 Dukan
- Good hospitals and city comforts, which matter for seniors in the heat
The cons
- Daily commuting to Ujjain takes about 1–1.5 hours each way on normal days, and much longer around Shahi Snans.
- Parking zones: on major snan days private vehicles are likely to be held outside Ujjain, with shuttles inward.
- Bhasma Aarti needs a very early start, which is hard from Indore.
Who should stay in Indore?
✅ Visitors coming on non-snan days ✅ Families who want city comforts and a short Ujjain visit ✅ Business travellers adding a darshan
Who should stay in Ujjain?
✅ Anyone attending a Shahi Snan ✅ Bhasma Aarti attendees ✅ Seniors who need short walks to the temple
Indore to Ujjain
- By car or taxi: about 55 km, 1–1.5 hours
- By bus: frequent buses between the two cities
- By train: several trains connect Indore and Ujjain Junction
What to see in Indore
- Rajwada, the Holkar palace in the old city
- Khajrana Ganesh Temple
- Lal Bagh Palace
- Sarafa Bazaar, a famous after-dark street-food market
- Kanch Mandir, a Jain glass temple
A split stay
A common plan: 1 night in Indore on arrival, 2 nights in Ujjain around your snan, then Omkareshwar on the way back to the airport. See the Ujjain–Omkareshwar itinerary.
