How dharamshalas and ashram guest houses in Haridwar work, what they cost, house rules to expect, and how to book safely for groups during the Kumbh 2027.
Haridwar has hosted pilgrims for centuries, and its dharamshalas—rest houses run by trusts, communities and temples—are part of that tradition. Many ashrams also offer simple guest rooms. For budget travellers and yatra groups, they can be excellent value.
Dharamshala vs ashram vs guest house
| Dharamshala | Ashram guest house | Budget guest house | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run by | Community or charitable trusts | Spiritual organisations | Private owners |
| Rooms | Simple rooms, sometimes dormitories | Simple, clean rooms | Simple to mid-range |

What to expect
- Simple rooms: a bed or mattress, a fan, and an attached or shared bathroom. Hot water may come by bucket or geyser.
- House rules: no alcohol, no non-vegetarian food, and sometimes no smoking or loud music. Some close their gates at night.
- Donation-based pricing at some places, with fixed tariffs at others.
- Community preference: some dharamshalas give priority to members of a particular community or region.
Booking during the Kumbh
- Book early. Many dharamshalas are booked out by yatra groups months in advance.
- Ask for photos of the actual room and bathroom.
- Confirm the gate timings. Pre-dawn snan starts need early exit.
- Check the distance to Har Ki Pauri on foot.
- Get confirmation in writing, ideally on the trust's letterhead or official channel. Beware of fake booking pages.
Groups and satsangs
For groups of 10 or more, we can block rooms or dormitories in checked guest houses and dharamshalas, with group meals and a coordinator. See Planning a group yatra to the Kumbh.
Our budget option
If you would rather stay inside the mela on a budget, our Tent Stay and Dormitory & Group Tents categories are priced on request for your dates. We share photos of the actual camp before you book.
