How traffic, parking, shuttles and road diversions are likely to work during the Haridwar Kumbh 2027, and how to plan your arrival and snan-day movement.
On ordinary days Haridwar is easy to drive around. On Kumbh snan days it becomes a carefully controlled pedestrian city. Knowing how this works will save you hours.
What the administration has announced so far
In its review meetings in October 2026, the Uttarakhand government directed officials to develop sufficient parking and to run shuttle buses between parking areas, temporary bus terminals and the major ghats. The mela administration has said parking and shuttle services will be provided at the city's entry points.
The detailed traffic plan, with exact parking lots, routes and timings, is usually released shortly before the mela and revised before each major snan. Always follow the latest police and mela advisories.
What usually happens on major snan days
- Diversions start the evening before. Heavy vehicles are stopped, and private cars are diverted to outer parking areas.
- Core zone closed to vehicles. The area around Har Ki Pauri and the main ghats becomes pedestrian-only.
- One-way pedestrian routes keep crowds moving to and from the ghats.
- Shuttles run from parking areas towards the mela, but you will still walk, often 1–3 km or more.
- Amrit Snan days (6 March, 8 March and 14 April 2027) have the strictest controls, as akhara procession routes are barricaded.
How to plan your movement
- Arrive a day early and park where your hotel or camp advises.
- Don't plan to drive on snan morning. Walk from your stay.
- Travel light. Rolling suitcases through crowds is miserable.
- Note your stay's nearest landmark and the route back.
- Leave after restrictions lift, usually the next day for major snans.

Driving yourself?
- Download offline maps, and save the mela helpline numbers once they are published.
- Expect long queues to enter parking areas. Keep water and snacks in the car.
- Note your parking lot number, and photograph the signboard.
