Mela camps, Har Ki Pauri hotels, Kankhal or Rishikesh? Compare the best areas to stay for the Haridwar Kumbh 2027 by walkability and budget.
Where you stay matters more at the Kumbh than on any other trip. On snan days vehicles are stopped far from the ghats, so walking distance to the river decides how easy your trip will be. Here is how the main areas compare.
Quick comparison
| Area | Walk to Har Ki Pauri | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mela camps (sectors along the Ganga) | Short walk or shuttle | Atmosphere, satsang, families | Basic camps vary a lot; check bathrooms and heating |
| Har Ki Pauri / Upper Road | 0–10 minutes | Seniors, short stays, aarti | Highest prices; narrow lanes |
| Railway Road / Devpura | 15–25 minutes | Mid-range hotels, rail access | Traffic diversions on snan days |
| Kankhal | 25–40 minutes | Quiet ashrams, longer stays | Further from the main ghat |
| Jwalapur / Bahadrabad / highway | Shuttle needed | Lower prices, drivers with cars | Long transfers on snan days |
| Rishikesh | 25 km away | Calm base, yoga, scenery | Not practical on Amrit Snan days |
1. Mela camps
The mela administration has been developing tent settlements across the mela sectors for 2027. Camps range from basic tents to Swiss cottages with attached bathrooms and heaters.
Choose a camp if you want to wake up inside the mela, join the bhajans and satsangs, and walk to the ghat on snan morning.
Read Kumbh tent camps in Haridwar and see our Luxury Camp and Deluxe Camp categories.
2. Hotels near Har Ki Pauri
The old town around Har Ki Pauri has hundreds of hotels, from simple to riverside properties.
Choose this area if you are travelling with elderly parents, staying only 1–2 nights, or want to attend the evening aarti every day.

3. Railway Road and Devpura
This is a practical middle ground: easy from the station, and mid-range hotels are plentiful. On Amrit Snan days you may still walk 2–3 km because of diversions.
4. Kankhal
Kankhal is the quiet, older southern part of Haridwar, with ashrams, the Daksheswara Mahadev temple and riverside ghats. It suits longer stays and spiritual retreats more than snan-day dashes.
5. Dharamshalas and ashrams
For budget travellers and groups, Haridwar has hundreds of dharamshalas and ashram guest houses. See our budget stay guide.
6. Rishikesh
Some travellers stay in Rishikesh and drive in. It works well on ordinary days, but not on Amrit Snan days, when traffic between the two towns is heavy. See Staying in Rishikesh for the Kumbh.
Our recommendation
- Families with children: a good mela camp
- Seniors: a hotel within 10 minutes of Har Ki Pauri, with a lift
- Groups on a budget: dharamshala blocks in Haridwar or Kankhal
- First-timers on an Amrit Snan: stay close and arrive a day early
