Is it smart to stay in Rishikesh and travel to the Haridwar Kumbh 2027? Distances, snan-day traffic, and who should (and shouldn't) choose a Rishikesh base.
Rishikesh is only about 25 km upstream of Haridwar, and it has a huge range of hotels, riverside resorts and ashrams. So should you stay there during the Kumbh?
The pros
- Calmer atmosphere: yoga, cafés and riverside walks away from the mela crowds.
- More choice: from budget hostels to luxury resorts.
- Great for longer trips: combine the Kumbh with yoga, Neelkanth Mahadev and the Triveni Ghat aarti.
The cons
- Snan-day traffic. On major bathing days the Haridwar–Rishikesh road can be very slow, and vehicles are stopped at parking areas outside the mela.
- Early starts. Getting to the ghat before dawn from Rishikesh means leaving in the middle of the night.
- Transfer costs add up over several days.
Who should stay in Rishikesh?
✅ Travellers visiting on regular snan days or non-snan days ✅ Families wanting a relaxed holiday with one Kumbh day ✅ Yoga and wellness travellers
Who should stay in Haridwar?
✅ Anyone attending an Amrit Snan (6 March, 8 March or 14 April 2027) ✅ Senior citizens who need short walks ✅ First-timers who want the full mela experience
A good compromise
Split your stay: 2 nights in Haridwar around your snan day, then 1–2 nights in Rishikesh. Our Haridwar Kumbh with Rishikesh package does exactly this. Also see the 4-day Haridwar–Rishikesh itinerary.
Getting between the two
The road takes about 45 minutes to an hour outside peak traffic. Taxis, buses and shared autos run between them. Ask your hotel about traffic diversions before setting out on snan days.
