Monsoon side trips from Nashik during the Simhastha 2027—Igatpuri, Bhandardara, Kalsubai, waterfalls, Gangapur dam and Nashik's vineyards—with safety tips.
The Simhastha falls at the peak of the monsoon, when the hills around Nashik are at their greenest. If you have an extra day, these are the best side trips. They are best saved for after your snan.
Igatpuri
- About 45 km from Nashik, on the Mumbai side.
- Misty hills, monsoon waterfalls and dams.
- Home to the Vipassana International Academy (Dhamma Giri), a world-renowned meditation centre. Courses need advance registration; it is not a sightseeing stop.
Bhandardara and Kalsubai
- Bhandardara: a lake and dam surrounded by waterfalls, including the famous Randha Falls, which are spectacular in the monsoon.
- Kalsubai: the highest peak in Maharashtra, with a small temple at the top. It is a popular but strenuous monsoon trek. Go only with experienced guides, and only in good weather.
Waterfalls near Nashik
- Someshwar waterfall on the Godavari, close to the city, beside the Someshwar temple
- Numerous seasonal falls along the Nashik–Trimbak and Igatpuri roads
Safety: never enter fast-flowing streams or stand at cliff edges. Every monsoon brings accidents at waterfalls. Follow local bans and warnings.
Gangapur dam
A large reservoir on the Godavari just upstream of Nashik. Its backwaters are pleasant for an evening drive.
Nashik's vineyards
Nashik is known as the wine capital of India and is also a major grape-growing region. Several wineries offer tours and tastings, and some have restaurants and stays.
- During the monsoon, the vines are green but it is not harvest season, which usually runs from January to March.
- Alcohol rules apply, including Maharashtra's legal drinking age. Many pilgrims will prefer to skip this. Keep it separate from your pilgrimage days if you go.
Plan a relaxed extra day
Add a day to any Nashik package for Igatpuri, Bhandardara or the waterfalls with a private car and an experienced monsoon driver. See also Places to visit in Nashik.
