Places to Visit in Nashik During the Simhastha

Ramkund, Kalaram Temple, Trimbakeshwar, Kushavarta, Brahmagiri, Pandavleni, Muktidham, Anjaneri, Saptashrungi and more—the best of Nashik for Kumbh pilgrims.

Nashik is far more than a Kumbh city. It has Ramayana sites, a Jyotirlinga, 2,000-year-old caves, monsoon hills and India's best-known vineyards. Here are the places worth your time, grouped by area.

Panchavati (old Nashik)

  1. Ramkund: the main Simhastha bathing tank on the Godavari, and the venue of the evening aarti.
  2. Kalaram Temple: an 18th-century black-stone temple of Lord Rama.
  3. Sita Gufa and the five banyans: the heart of Panchavati.
  4. Goraram and Kapaleshwar temples: Kapaleshwar Mahadev stands on the bank right opposite Ramkund.

See the Panchavati Ramayana trail.

Trimbakeshwar (28 km)

  1. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga. See the darshan guide.
  2. Kushavarta Kund: the Shaiva snan site.
  3. Brahmagiri and Gangadwar: the source of the Godavari. See the trek guide.
  4. Anjaneri: a hill on the Nashik–Trimbak road, revered as the birthplace of Lord Hanuman, with a popular monsoon trek.

Around Nashik city

  1. Pandavleni Caves: Buddhist rock-cut caves on Trirashmi hill. See our guide.
  2. Dadasaheb Phalke Smarak: a memorial park at the foot of Pandavleni, honouring the father of Indian cinema, who was born in Trimbak.
  3. Muktidham: a white-marble temple with replicas of the twelve Jyotirlingas, near Nashik Road.
  4. Someshwar temple and waterfall on the Godavari, lovely in the monsoon.

Further afield

  1. Saptashrungi Devi (Vani): a revered hill shrine of the Goddess, about 60 km from Nashik, often counted among Maharashtra's Shakti Peethas.
  2. Shirdi, about 90 km away. See the Nashik + Shirdi plan.
  3. Bhimashankar and Grishneshwar for a Jyotirlinga yatra.
  4. Igatpuri, vineyards and waterfalls. See Beyond the Kumbh.

Sightseeing tips

  • Keep sightseeing for non-snan days. Roads near the river are restricted on Amrit Snans.
  • Shravan Mondays in August are very busy at all Shiva temples.
  • Rain: carry a poncho, and avoid hill climbs in heavy downpours.
