Brahmagiri Hill & Gangadwar

The hill where the Godavari rises, with the Gangadwar shrine reached by a long flight of steps.

Brahmagiri rises behind Trimbakeshwar and is revered as the source of the Godavari. A climb of roughly 750 steps leads to Gangadwar, a shrine to Goddess Ganga (Godavari), with caves associated with Gorakhnath nearby.

In the monsoon the hills turn green and streams pour off the slopes; during Shravan many devotees walk the Brahmagiri pradakshina around the hill.

Visiting tips

  • Start early and carry water; the steps are steep and slippery in rain.
  • Watch out for monkeys and keep food packed away.
  • Avoid the climb during heavy rain or poor visibility.
