Kushavarta Kund, Trimbakeshwar
The sacred tank regarded as the source of the Godavari, where the Shaiva akharas take their Simhastha snan.
Kushavarta is an eighteenth-century stone tank in the heart of Trimbak, surrounded by colonnaded verandahs. Tradition holds that the Godavari, which rises on Brahmagiri, re-emerges here, and that the sage Gautama brought the river down to the earth at this spot.
During the Simhastha the Shaiva akharas take their Amrit Snan at Kushavarta; in 2027 the third Amrit Snan here falls on 12 September. On ordinary days pilgrims bathe or sprinkle its water before Trimbakeshwar darshan.
Visiting tips
- Access is tightly controlled on Amrit Snan days—follow police routes.
- Combine with Trimbakeshwar darshan; the two are a few minutes apart on foot.
