Brahmagiri and the Source of the Godavari: Monsoon Trek Guide

Climbing Brahmagiri above Trimbakeshwar: the ~750 steps to Gangadwar, the source of the Godavari, the Shravan pradakshina, Anjaneri and monsoon safety.

Behind the Trimbakeshwar temple rises Brahmagiri, the hill where the Godavari is born. In the monsoon, the season of the Simhastha, it turns emerald green, with streams pouring off its cliffs. For fit pilgrims it is one of the most rewarding walks of a Nashik Kumbh.

The legend

The sage Gautama lived on Brahmagiri. To atone for accidentally causing a cow's death, he prayed to Shiva, who released the Ganga here. Released on Brahmagiri, she became the Godavari (Gautami). The river is said to vanish into the hill and re-emerge at Kushavarta in Trimbak town.

The climb to Gangadwar

  • A stepped path of roughly 750 steps leads up to Gangadwar, a shrine to Goddess Ganga (Godavari) on the hillside.
  • Nearby are caves associated with Gorakhnath and a group of small shrines.
  • Allow 2–3 hours for the round trip at an easy pace, plus time at the shrines.
  • Further trails continue towards the top of Brahmagiri. Go only with a local guide, and only in good weather.

Trail conditions change, especially in the monsoon. Ask locally before you set out.

Brahmagiri pradakshina

During Shravan, which falls in August in 2027, many devotees walk the pradakshina (circumambulation) around Brahmagiri. It is a long walk, so join it only if you are fit and prepared for rain and mud.

Anjaneri: Hanuman's birthplace

On the Nashik–Trimbak road, Anjaneri hill is revered as the birthplace of Lord Hanuman. It has a popular monsoon trek with a small temple and a lake on the plateau.

Monsoon safety

  • Start early, as afternoons bring heavier rain and mist.
  • Grip shoes are essential, since steps and rocks are slippery.
  • Monkeys: keep food sealed, and don't carry loose snacks in your hands.
  • Avoid the climb in heavy rain, strong wind or poor visibility.
  • Carry water, a poncho and a charged phone, and tell someone your plan.
  • Not recommended for seniors with heart or knee problems, or for young children in wet weather.
