How to reach Neelkanth Mahadev Temple from Haridwar and Rishikesh, the legend of the temple, best time to go and practical tips for a Kumbh 2027 visit.
High in the forested hills above Rishikesh stands Neelkanth Mahadev, one of the most revered Shiva temples in Uttarakhand. Many Kumbh pilgrims add it to their Haridwar trip.
The legend
During the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean that also produced the amrit of the Kumbh legend, a deadly poison called halahal emerged. To save creation, Lord Shiva drank it, and Parvati held his throat so it would not go further. His throat turned blue, giving him the name Neelkanth, "the blue-throated one". The temple marks the place where he is believed to have meditated afterwards.
The link with the amrit makes Neelkanth especially meaningful during the Kumbh.
Route
- Haridwar to Rishikesh: about 25 km
- Rishikesh to Neelkanth: about 30 km by a winding hill road through forest, via the Lakshman Jhula side
- Total from Haridwar: roughly 2–3 hours each way, depending on traffic
Some pilgrims walk the old forest trail from Rishikesh, a long uphill trek. It is only for the fit, and only with company.
Best time to go
- Early morning, to beat traffic and queues
- Avoid: Kumbh snan days (traffic around Haridwar), Mondays in Shravan, and Maha Shivratri, when crowds are enormous
- In January and February, carry a warm layer. The temple is higher and cooler than Haridwar.
Tips
- The road has hairpin bends. Carry medication if anyone gets motion sickness.
- Hire a taxi with an experienced hill driver.
- Shops near the temple sell prasad and offerings.
- Keep half a day at least. Combining Neelkanth with a full Rishikesh day makes a long but rewarding trip.
