Planning a jeep safari at Rajaji National Park's Chilla range near Haridwar—season, wildlife, booking and how to fit it into a Kumbh 2027 trip.
Just across the Ganga from Haridwar lies Rajaji National Park, part of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, which stretches along the Shivalik hills between Haridwar, Rishikesh and Dehradun. A morning jeep safari here is a peaceful counterpoint to the Kumbh crowds, and a big hit with children.
Wildlife you may see
- Asian elephants: the park is especially known for them
- Spotted deer (chital), sambar and barking deer
- Wild boar and langurs
- Leopards, which are elusive
- Birds: hundreds of species, including hornbills, kingfishers, and winter migrants along the river
Safari zones near Haridwar
The Chilla range is closest to Haridwar, roughly 10 km from the city, and is the most convenient for Kumbh visitors. Other ranges, such as Motichur and Ramgarh, are reached from the Haridwar–Rishikesh–Dehradun side.
Season and timings
- The park is usually open to tourists from mid-November to mid-June and closed during the monsoon. This covers the entire Kumbh period.
- Safaris run in morning and afternoon shifts.
- Check the Uttarakhand Forest Department's current season, zone rules and booking process before you go. Online booking and permits are usually required.
Tips
- Mornings are best for birds and cooler light. Carry a warm jacket in January and February.
- Wear earth-coloured clothes, and keep quiet in the jeep.
- Carry ID for every passenger, as it is needed for permits.
- Binoculars and a zoom lens add a lot.
- Don't feed or approach animals, and follow the guide's instructions.
Fitting it into your Kumbh trip
- Plan the safari for the day after your snan, never on a snan day, because of traffic.
- A morning safari plus an afternoon at Kankhal or Mansa Devi makes a balanced day.
- Families staying 3–4 nights can add it to a Haridwar–Rishikesh itinerary.
