Haridwar Kumbh for NRIs and Foreign Visitors

Visas, flights, SIM cards, money, etiquette and health: a practical Haridwar Kumbh 2027 guide for NRIs and international visitors.

The Kumbh draws visitors from all over the world: NRIs bringing their parents, seekers, photographers and curious travellers. Here is what international visitors should know for Haridwar, 14 January to 20 April 2027.

Visas and documents

  • Foreign nationals need a valid Indian visa. Many nationalities can apply for an e-Visa (tourist) online. Check the official Indian e-Visa portal for eligibility and timelines.
  • OCI cardholders don't need a separate visa.
  • Carry your passport at all times. Hotels must record foreign guests' details (Form C), so expect to show your passport and visa at check-in.

Registration

As of October 2026, no mandatory paid registration for pilgrims had been announced for the Haridwar Kumbh. Ignore unofficial "registration fee" messages, and check official Uttarakhand government sources closer to the date.

Getting there

  • Fly into Delhi (DEL), then take a train or car to Haridwar (about 220 km), or a domestic flight to Dehradun (Jolly Grant), about 35 km from Haridwar.
  • See How to reach Haridwar.

Practicalities

  • SIM card: buy a local SIM at the airport or in the city with your passport. Kumbh crowds slow down networks, so download offline maps.
  • Money: UPI is widely used in India, and international visitors can sometimes use it through select apps. Carry cash in small notes for e-rickshaws, offerings and small shops. ATMs are available but can run out on busy days.
  • Language: Hindi is widely spoken. English is understood at hotels and by many younger people.
  • Food: Haridwar is vegetarian and alcohol-free. See our food guide.

Etiquette

  • Dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees. A scarf is useful for temples.
  • Remove shoes at temples and ghats.
  • Ask before photographing people, especially sadhus, and never photograph people bathing.
  • Accept prasad with your right hand.
  • Public displays of affection are frowned upon.

Health and safety

  • Consult a travel clinic about recommended vaccinations before you travel.
  • Drink sealed bottled water.
  • Protect against cold in January and February, and sun in April.
  • Keep your passport in a secure inner pocket, and a photocopy separately.
  • Register with your country's embassy if it offers a traveller registration service.
