Taking kids to the Haridwar Kumbh 2027? Choosing the right day, ID and lost-child precautions, safe bathing, food, health and fun things for children to do.
Children often remember the Kumbh for the rest of their lives: the colours, the sadhus, the river of lamps at the aarti. With the right precautions, it can be a safe and joyful family trip.
1. Pick a calmer day
Avoid Amrit Snan days (6 March, 8 March and 14 April 2027) with young children. Choose a regular snan day such as Basant Panchami (11 Feb), Magh Purnima (20 Feb) or Nav Samvatsar (7 April), or simply a non-snan day. See all snan dates.
2. Lost-child precautions (most important)
- Put an ID card or wristband on each child with the child's name, two parent phone numbers, and the hotel or camp name.
- Photograph your children each morning, so you have what they are wearing on your phone.
- Dress children in bright, distinctive colours.
- Teach them a "stand still" rule: if lost, stay where you are, or go to the nearest police officer or lost-and-found (khoya-paya) centre.
- Agree a meeting point they can recognise, such as the clock tower at Har Ki Pauri.
- In crowds, hold hands at all times. Use a child harness for toddlers if you are comfortable with it.
3. Safe bathing
- Children should not bathe on crowded days or at the busiest steps.
- An adult must hold the child, and the adult should hold the chains.
- For toddlers, a symbolic snan is enough: sprinkle Ganga jal, or bathe their feet.
- The water is very cold in January and February. Dry and dress children immediately.
4. Where to stay
A camp gives children space, atmosphere and walking access. A hotel near Har Ki Pauri gives you a quick retreat for naps. See Where to stay.
5. Food and health
- Stick to freshly cooked, hot food and sealed or boiled water.
- Carry ORS, basic medicines, sanitiser and wet wipes.
- Pack warm layers for January–February mornings.
- Plan rest breaks. Kumbh days involve a lot of walking.
6. Things children love
- The Ganga Aarti and floating a diya
- The ropeway ride to Mansa Devi or Chandi Devi
- A Rajaji jungle safari to see elephants
- The Bharat Mata Mandir's floors of saints and heroes
- Watching the colourful akhara camps, from a respectful distance
