Monsoon river safety, slippery ghats, crowd management, lost-and-found, health and emergency tips for the Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Simhastha 2027.
The Nashik Simhastha combines two challenges: huge crowds and monsoon rain. Past Kumbhs, including the 2003 Nashik Simhastha, have seen crowd crushes, and the Godavari floods Panchavati in heavy monsoons. A few precautions make a big difference.
River safety
- Never enter the river beyond the railings or marked areas. Currents strengthen quickly after rain.
- Water releases from upstream dams can raise the Godavari at Nashik. Listen to announcements and police instructions.
- Locals watch the Dutondya Maruti statue at Ramkund: the higher the water climbs on it, the worse the flood.
- Children should not bathe in the river on crowded or rainy days.
- SDRF and rescue teams are usually stationed at the main ghats during the Simhastha. Follow their instructions.
Slippery ghats and steps
- Wear non-slip footwear, and carry slip-ons for the ghat itself.
- Hold railings, and walk, don't rush, on wet steps.
- Help seniors with an arm on both sides on crowded steps.
Crowd safety
- Avoid stopping in narrow lanes, on bridges or at bottlenecks.
- If a crowd surges, move diagonally towards the edge, and keep your arms up near your chest to protect your breathing.
- Don't push against the flow. Wait for gaps.
- Follow one-way routes and barricades. They exist to prevent crushes.
- Amrit Snan days have the densest crowds. Families with young children or elders should choose another day.
Lost and found
- Put a contact card in every child's and senior's pocket, with names, two phone numbers and the hotel address.
- Photograph your family each morning, so you know what everyone is wearing.
- Agree a meeting point at each place you visit.
- The administration runs lost-and-found centres. Note the nearest one.
Health in the monsoon
- Drink sealed or boiled water only.
- Eat freshly cooked, hot food, and avoid cut fruit and street ice.
- Use mosquito repellent, as dengue and malaria are monsoon risks.
- Keep feet dry, and carry antifungal powder.
- Carry ORS and your regular medicines.
Emergency numbers
- 112: national emergency number
- 108: ambulance (Maharashtra)
- Save the mela control room and police helpline numbers once they are published.
