Haridwar to Rishikesh distance, transport and a one-day plan for Kumbh pilgrims: Ram Jhula, Lakshman Jhula, ashrams and the Triveni Ghat aarti.
Rishikesh, the Yoga Capital of the World, is just upstream of Haridwar. The two towns are so close that a day trip is easy, and it makes a wonderful contrast to the Kumbh crowds.
Haridwar to Rishikesh: distance and transport
- Distance: about 25 km
- Time: about 45–60 minutes by road outside peak traffic
- Options: private taxi (easiest), local buses, shared autos, or the short train hop to Yog Nagari Rishikesh or Rishikesh station
Avoid travelling on snan days, when traffic is diverted around the mela.
A one-day plan
Morning
- Leave Haridwar after breakfast.
- Start at Ram Jhula and walk along the river towards Lakshman Jhula. Check which bridges are currently open to pedestrians.
- Visit the riverside temples and ashrams along the way, such as Parmarth Niketan and Gita Bhawan.
Afternoon
- Lunch at a riverside café. Rishikesh, like Haridwar, is largely vegetarian and alcohol-free.
- Browse the shops for rudraksha, books, shawls and yoga gear.
- Optional: a drop-in yoga or meditation class.
Evening
- Attend the Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat or Parmarth Niketan, both beautiful, with a more intimate feel than Har Ki Pauri.
- Return to Haridwar.
Add-ons
- Neelkanth Mahadev, about 30 km beyond Rishikesh. Go early, as it makes for a long day. See our Neelkanth guide.
