Har Ki Pauri

Haridwar’s most sacred ghat and the main Kumbh bathing site, famous for its evening Ganga Aarti.

Har Ki Pauri—“the steps of Hari”—is the ghat where the amrit is believed to have fallen in Haridwar. The Brahma Kund here is the focal point of every Kumbh, and the akharas take their Amrit Snan at this spot.

Every evening at sunset, priests perform the Ganga Aarti with large brass lamps while thousands float diyas on the river. It is one of the most moving sights in India, Kumbh or not.

Visiting tips

  • Arrive 45–60 minutes before sunset for a good aarti spot.
  • Use the chains and railings in the water—the current is strong.
  • Footwear stands are available near the ghat entrances.
