Akbar’s Fort, Akshayavat & Patalpuri

Akbar’s sixteenth-century riverside fort, home to the sacred Akshayavat tree and the underground Patalpuri temple.

Emperor Akbar built this massive fort at the confluence in 1583. Most of it is still used by the army, but pilgrims can visit the Akshayavat—the “immortal banyan” of the Puranas—and the underground Patalpuri temple inside.

The Akshayavat is mentioned in pilgrim accounts going back many centuries and is believed to survive even the dissolution of the world. Patalpuri, an underground temple within the fort walls, houses many deities and is visited together with the tree. The fort’s high riverside walls are also a striking sight from a boat at the Sangam.
